Journal Prompt #1

My prior experience with U.S history wasn't the best one. I last took history my junior year of high school. History was never an easy subject for me; I can't seem to remember much of what I learned that year. To make it worse, I didn't have a good teacher. I tried my best to pay attention to what she was covering that day but then she would go on and talk about a completely different thing. It was very confusing. The text book was more helpful to me. She was a really nice teacher but her teaching strategies weren't the best ones. She wouldn't really discuss or lecture our class. She would talk to the class for about twenty minutes and then she would have us answer questions in the text book or have us take notes on videos we watched. Everyone would get lost during her short lessons. Even though that class wasn't helpful, I did pass it with a B because I did all the class work and homework she assigned. This semester I know I have a great teacher and I know this because he makes history interesting and understandable for me. I know it's not going to be easy because history isn't my favorite subject. I'm going to have to really focus and try not to get behind in class.

  1. Great reflection here! I'm glad you think Prof. Gryzmala is a great teacher! I agree with you on this analysis! He is very knowledgeable and articulate, but he also really cares about his subject matter. He has dissected history in a way that makes it interesting, yes, but he also zeroes in on the parts of U.S. History that still really matter today. Even though his lectures focus on the past, everything he covers helps us to better understand and navigate the future.
